Harriet Beecher was born to a prominent Connecticut family in Litchfield on June 14, 1811. Before she began her prolific writing career, she taught school with her older sister Catherine. Harriet married widower Calvin Stowe in 1836, and they had 7 children. Her most famous book is Uncle Tom’s Cabin, which was published in 1852. This powerful antislavery novel helped bring the abolition cause to the forefront of the American conscious. Uncle Tom’s Cabin, as well as her other works made Harriet Beecher Stowe one of the most successful authors of 19th century America. Stowe lived on Nook Farm in Hartford as next door neighbor to Mark Twain from 1873 until her death in 1896.
