Old Saybrook, in Middlesex County, is located in southern Connecticut on the Long Island Sound at the mouth of the Connecticut River. The town includes the borough of Fenwick. Originally settled by the Dutch, the English granted a deed of conveyance, known as the Warwick Patent, and commissioned John Winthrop Jr. as governor. This lead to the building of Fort Saybrook in 1636. Named for Lord Saye and Sele and Lord Brooke, Saybrook was its own colony until 1644 (when it joined the Connecticut Colony). It then incorporated as a town, separating from Essex, in 1854. Old Saybrook is the original site of Yale College, which was established as the “Collegiate School” in 1701.
