ConnecticutHistory.org Content Takedown Policy

Last Updated: September 24, 2024

ConnecticutHistory.org is committed to providing free and open access to Connecticut’s shared history through our content and resources. ConnecticutHistory.org has been around for over a decade, through many changes in best practices, digital tools, and scholarship. We are constantly working to improve both the usability and content of the project, but we cannot catch everything automatically. This Takedown Policy is to provide guidance regarding potential improper reuse of content, incorrect information, and inappropriate content.

Reuse of Content

CT Humanities (CTH) owns the copyright to the textual content published on the site, unless expressly stated otherwise. When reusing content, we provide proper attribution and, if possible, link back to the original source.

CTH does not claim nor own the copyright to images that accompany ConnecticutHistory.org articles. We use images that are in the public domain, reusable through an appropriate license, usable through permission from one of our partners, or otherwise usable through copyright fair use principles. When reusing images, we aim to provide proper attribution and, if possible, link back to the original source.

For reused content that lacks proper attribution, staff will work to correct the attribution. If content is found to be improperly reused (due to copyright restrictions), staff will review and take the article down from the website.

Incorrect Information

The content on ConnecticutHistory.org is reviewed by both CTH editorial staff and an external editorial board. At the same time, mistakes happen and new scholarship emerges resulting in information that is either out of date or incorrect. With the understanding that terms, language, conventions, and ideas change over time, articles on ConnecticutHistory.org undergo a periodic review and, if needed, content updating. For more about ConnecticutHistory.org’s Content Updating Policy, see this webpage.

Articles with potential incorrect information that are brought to the attention of CTH staff outside of the periodic review process will be reviewed and raised to the level of the editorial board, if necessary.

Inappropriate Content

Connecticut’s history is constantly being retold and rediscovered from a myriad of perspectives and opinions. ConnecticutHistory.org takes pride in sharing a wide range of histories from our state using language that is suitable for a diverse audience. While ConnecticutHistory.org content goes through a review process, there are different opinions about what constitutes inappropriate content.

Concerns about outdated language or offensive terminology will be reviewed through ConnecticutHistory.org’s Content Updating Policy. Concerns regarding the topic of content or aspects that affect the core ideas or premise of the content will be reviewed by staff and raised to the level of the editorial board, if necessary.

Reporting Process

If you suspect improper use of content, want to report incorrect information, or discuss potentially inappropriate content, contact us via email at connecticuthistory@cthumanities.org. Please include the title and link to the article in question and as many details about the issue as possible. If reporting improper use of content, please also include the content’s original source.

CTH editorial staff will review the report within a week and assess whether action is needed. The issue could be raised to the level of the editorial board and may warrant temporarily taking the article down until a full review can be completed. Potential final action includes corrections/updates or a takedown of the content.

CTH editorial staff, in consultation with the editorial board, will make the final decision regarding content and any decisions will be communicated to the user who reported the issue via email.
